Wild World Heroes: Summer Reading Challenge and Nature Treasure Hunt

Summer Reading Challenge

The Summer Reading Challenge is an annual event to encourage children aged 4-11 to read for pleasure. This year’s theme is Wild World Heroes, inspiring children to stand up for the planet. Our local libraries are supporting and promoting the challenge, and children can pick up a pack and borrow books to read for the challenge from their local library. The challenge runs from 10th July to 11th September. There are prize draws for children participating and YACWAG has been pleased to support the Summer Reading Challenge this year by providing a prize at both Yatton and Congresbury libraries of an RSPB Spotters’ Clipboard and bird guide.

The theme offers a great opportunity for children to learn more about the natural world and environmental issues, including how they can take action to look after nature. Local libraries will be stocking and promoting books about nature and conservation during the whole of the reading challenge period.

YACWAG is promoting the reading challenge and in Congresbury library there will be resources for children like word searches and ideas for nature-based craft activities. The idea is that children will be able to take photos of wildlife and get their parents to upload them to the Congresbury Community Library Facebook page for all to see.

Wild World Heroes Nature Treasure Hunt

YACWAG has set a Wild World Heroes Nature Treasure Hunt along the Strawberry Line between Yatton and Congresbury for the month of August. Just follow the trail to find all eight posters and collect your list of nature treasures, then get snapping and share your photos with us to be in with a chance of winning a prize!

You will find eight numbered posters featuring the Summer Reading Challenge Wild World Heroes along the Strawberry Line between Yatton Station and Congresbury Station. Starting at either end is fine, just be sure that you find all eight. Each poster has the name of a nature treasure (for example, ‘a wildflower’). To enter the treasure hunt you will need to find an example of each of these nature treasures and take a photo of it. You can do this while you’re following the trail or later on, just so long as you have all your photos taken before the end of August.

Once you have photos of all eight nature treasures, ask a grown up to post them on the YACWAG Facebook Group along with your name and age so that you can be entered for the prize draw.

The prizes are:

Age 4-7: Ladybird What to Look for in Summer and What to Look for in Autumn books

Age 8-11: The Lost Words card game based on the bestselling book by Jackie Morris and Robert Macfarlane

The challenge will run from 1st to 31st August and we will pick the winners from all entries received by the closing date of 31st August. If you find a poster missing or damaged, please let us know. By entering you give permission for your photos to be used on other YACWAG social media channels, unless you notify us otherwise.
